CALIFORNIA, Md. (April 14, 2011) Southern Marylanders will have two reasons to celebrate this weekend. The annual filing of the tax returns ends and the Tiki Bar on Solomons Island opens for the 2011 season. The latter results in thousands of people coming from across the region to party on the island throughout the weekend.
As with past years, local police will be making a strong presence in and around the island to deal with drunks, fights, and DUI drivers. Maryland State Police and the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, as well as law enforcement from neighboring jurisdictions, will be conducting DUI saturation patrols Friday and Saturday night. Areas where a high number of DUI arrests or crashes have occurred in the past will be targeted for enforcement efforts, say police.
A Designated Driver program will run Friday and Saturday from noon to 10:00 p.m. The program is sponsored by Bob Hall, LLC and Anheuser Busch, working together with the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police, the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, and the Calvert and St. Mary's Counties Community Traffic Safety Programs.
Every designated driver will receive an instant prize from a long list that includes beach towels, tee shirts, paddle ball games and can coolies, to name just a few. Designated drivers will sign a pledge card, which will be entered into a drawing for two grand prizes of a Solomons Island Dream Weekend that includes gift certificates offered by the Blue Herring Bed & Breakfast for one nights' stay and the Holiday Inn for one nights' stay. Other merchants, the Tiki Bar, Catamarans, Calypso Bay, Solomons Pier, Stoney's Kingfisher, DiGiovanni's Dock of the Bay, Grill Sergeant, Clippers Canine Café, Pepper's Pet Pantry, Island Pet Salon and Sail Solomons are all participating in the dream weekend by offering gift certificates.
Sheriff Mike Evans will draw the grand prize ticket during a ceremony at the Sheriff's Office on Monday, April 18th at 10:00 a.m.
