Police Investigating Shooting of Show Horse in Charlotte Hall

LA PLATA, Md. (February 4, 2011)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office today released the following bulletin regarding the shooting of a show horse.

SHERIFF'S OFFICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING OF A HORSE: The Charles County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting of a show horse that occurred on January 21 in the 12500 block of Old Homeplace Drive in Charlotte Hall. The horse's owner found the horse lying in a pasture suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Due to the nature of his injury, the horse was euthanized by a veterinarian who was summoned to provide medical assistance.

A preliminary search of records shows since 2008, two other incidents involving a horse in that area have been reported to the Agency: one involved a horse that was shot with a paintball gun and the other involved a horse that had been struck by an arrow. A suspect was developed in one case, but a review with the State's Attorney's Office revealed there was not enough evidence to pursue criminal charges. At this point, there is no evidence linking these incidents but investigators will look into the possibility of any connections.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office considers this matter serious and is asking anyone with additional information to call (301) 932-2222. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Charles County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. A cash reward is being offered for the tip that leads to the arrest and indictment of the suspects.
