PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (January 21, 2011) — Police in Calvert County recently released the following incident and arrest reports.
DRUG ARREST DURING TRAFFIC STOP: On January 13 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Cpl. V. Bortchevsky of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Solomons Island Road at C. Jones Road in Sunderland for failing to use a turn signal while making a turn. One of the occupants of the vehicle was identified as Larry Francis Whittington, 25 of Lothian. Whittington was found to be in possession of approximately 35.7 grams of crack-cocaine. Whittington also had an open arrest warrant for failure to appear for traffic charges through Anne Arundel County. Whittington was placed under arrest and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where approximately 3.5 grams of crack-cocaine was located on his person. He was charged with drug possession and related violations.
HOSPITAL CALLS POLICE WHEN PATIENT REFUSES TREATMENT, MAN TURNS OUT TO BE WANTED: On January 19 at 3:17 a.m., units from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Calvert Memorial Hospital for a patient that had fled the hospital. The subject, a male, age 40, of Prince Frederick, had checked himself into the hospital for evaluation and subsequently complained of chest pains. Before his health complaints could be addressed, the man decided he was leaving the hospital against medical advice. He left with an IV still in his arm. One of the nurses followed the subject to the parking lot and attempted to stand in front of his vehicle to prevent him from leaving; however, he gunned the engine and drove past the nurse almost striking him. It was at this time information was received that the subject was wanted by the Sheriff's Office on three open warrants for first degree assault. The subject has an extensive history of assault and illegal weapons possession.
A lookout was posted after which Sgt. Brian McCourt located the man at his home in Prince Frederick. The subject ran into the home, and a barricade was called after he refused to exit the residence. Special Operations Team members relieved Patrol Deputies of perimeter duties, and as SOT members approached the front yard, the subject exited the residence and was taken into custody. He was transported back to CMH to be medically cleared prior to his eventual transport to the Detention Center. Special Operations Team members remained on scene at CMH for security reasons.
CHILD SUPPORT WARRANT TURNS INTO CONFLICT: On January 19 at approximately 6:00 a.m., Pfc. John Harley of the Charles County Sheriff's Office Warrant Unit along with Deputy Jonathan Parsons of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office Patrol Bureau responded to a home on 3rd Street in North Beach, Calvert County, in an attempt to locate and arrest Robert Alan Mandley, 52, who had an active child support warrant on file in Charles County.
As Pfc. Harley knocked on the front door he observed the suspect retreating into a back room. At that time a barricade was called and road patrol set up a perimeter. Members of the Special Operations Team responded along with Cpl. Scott Parrish, a member of the Conflict Management Team of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. The suspect was known to have an extensive history of drug possession as well as weapon violations.
Lt. R. Thomas of the S.O.T. utilized the Public Address system on the Sheriff's Office Bearcat and ordered Mandley out of the house. Moments later a white female who identified herself as the girlfriend of the suspect came out of the house and reported that the suspect and his mother were inside.
Lt. Thomas continued to make announcements over the PA system and at 7:58 a.m. Mandley exited the house, was taken into custody and turned over to Pfc. Harley without incident.
After taking the suspect into custody members of SOT entered and secured the house. While inside SOT located the suspect's mother, age 73, who appeared upset and was assessed by medical personnel. It was determined she was not in need of immediate medical assistance. Mandley also refused transport to the hospital.
BOYFRIEND KIDNAPS GIRLFRIEND, FLEES POLICE: On January 4 around 12:30 p.m., Maryland State Troopers from the Prince Frederick Barrack responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a domestic assault in the parking lot of Calvert Memorial Hospital at 130 Hospital Drive in Prince Frederick.
Trooper Bender arrived on the scene and determined that the victim, Janice Hagens, 29, of Bryans Road, was confronted by her boyfriend Shawn Farmer, 29, of Waldorf, when she arrived for work. Hagens advised that Farmer entered the passenger's side of her vehicle when she parked her car. Farmer stated he had a gun and ordered Hagens to drive him to another location. A struggle ensued, during which, Hagens and Farmer fought over control of the vehicle. The vehicle subsequently collided with two parked vehicles. Hagens climbed into the back seat of the vehicle and fled out the rear door. Farmer fled the scene.
Troopers and Calvert County Sheriff's Deputies patrolled the area in search of Farmer. Numerous calls were received from citizens who saw Farmer on foot in the Prince Frederick area. A caller advised that Farmer climbed down from the roof of the Safeway and was running towards Route 4. Trooper First Class Ewig and Trooper First Class Roy of the Calvert Investigative Team, caught Farmer behind the Central Square Shopping Center in Prince Frederick and placed Farmer under arrest.
Farmer is being charged with 2nd Degree Assault, False Imprisonment and Malicious Destruction of Property. He was incarcerated at the Calvert County Detention Center.
