CSM Athletes Reach Region XX Championships


Volleyball, Men’s, Women’s Soccer All Post Winning Seasons

LA PLATA, Md. (November 15, 2010)—Student athletes on the College of Southern Maryland’s volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer teams have a lot in common this fall-they all reached the Maryland Junior College (MDJUCO) Region XX Championships and walked away with plaques, medals, recognition and some with awards.

"Fall was a great season for CSM athletics,” said CSM Director of Student Life and Athletics Michelle Ruble. “We are proud of all three teams and their accomplishments."

The volleyball team finished the regular season with a perfect 13-0 in conference play to capture the MDJUCO championship for the first time since 2001. The Hawks hosted the Region XX Volleyball Tournament Nov. 6-7, where they captured the regional runner-up spot behind Hagerstown Community College. With a post-season record of 26-12, the Lady Hawks rank 19th in the nation.

Athletes receiving awards for 1st Team All-Region XX are Shelby Barnes of North Port, Fla. and Kelly Fagan of Huntingtown; for 2nd Team All-Region XX are Tara Santarmes of Huntingtown and Jess Tallant of Lusby; and for All-Region XX Tournament Team are Fagan, Tallant and Barnes.

The men’s soccer team reached the championship game of the Region XX Tournament for the fifth-straight year, but lost to Essex Community College in penalty kicks. The game was tied 1-1 after double-overtime, forcing a shoot-out where the Hawks fell 5-3. The team finished the season 10-8 in conference play.

The Hawks finished the post-season 11-7-1 as runner-up in Region XX, having defeated every Division I program in the region. Athletes receiving awards for 1st Team All-Region XX are Rudy Morales of Hyattsville, Taylor Ross of Waldorf and Giles Che of Bamenda, Cameroon; and for 2nd Team All-Region XX are Samson Defeugaing of New-Bell/Douala, Cameroon, and Valerie Taku of Limbe, Cameroon.

The women’s soccer team also advanced to the Region XX semi-finals, falling fell to Hartford Community College 5-0. The team finished the season 8-8-1. Lindsay Smith of Waldorf received an award for 2nd Team All-Region XX.
