LARGO, Md. (October 29, 2010)For the first time in history, Prince Georges Community College will host the National Junior College Athletic Associations Womens Soccer Championship, Thursday, November 4, through Sunday, November 7, at the colleges Largo campus.
Eight teams will be competing to be named the best team in the country as they take to the Prince Georges Community Colleges newly renovated soccer field. Students will play four games on Thursday, November 4 and Friday, November 5. Three games will be played on Sunday.
Without the support of partners like Chick-fil-A and the Gaylord National Resort we wouldnt be able to welcome these remarkable athletes to Prince Georges County and to the college, said Jo Ann Todaro, athletic director at Prince Georges Community College. This historic competition should not only highlight the areas growing interest in soccer but it should also build greater relationships with professional organizations like Washington Freedom, she added.
Briana Scurry, a member of Washington Freedom and starting goalkeeper for the US Womens National Team (1994-1999) and the 2003 Womens World Cup, will be speaking at the championship awards banquet on November 3. The dinner begins at 6pm on the Largo campus. Scurry was named WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003 and was a three-time all-WUSA selection.
