Pedestrian Killed on Access Road to Md. International Raceway


Vehicle was traveling at high rate, say police

CALIFORNIA, Md. (October 23, 2010)—A Bowie man is dead after being struck by a vehicle as he walked along the access road to Maryland International Raceway in Mechanicsville late Friday night. Richard Arland Jackson, 20, was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown via ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police and rescue personnel were called to the accident around 10:28 p.m. Trooper Mersman of the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack was the first police officer on scene and he conducted the preliminary investigation.

Trooper Mersman determined that a vehicle, operated by Jerron Alonzo Jennings, of Glenn Dale, was traveling northbound on the access road headed towards Budds Creek Road. Mr. Jackson was standing on the access road and was subsequently struck by Jennings' vehicle.

Police say the vehicle was "traveling at high rate" of speed when it struck the victim.

Jennings was not injured.

Mr. Jackson's family was located in Bowie and notified of the accident in the early morning hours Saturday, say police.

The collision is still under investigation.
