LA PLATA, Md. (March 06, 2010)—Students, staff and community members from Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School in La Plata recently raised more than $3,250 through the St. Judes Hospital Math-A-Thon. Students received a math workbook to complete during winter break, and collected donations based off of the number of problems they completed.
This is the third school year that Mitchell has participated in the event. Five students raised more than $100 each. They are: first graders Tyler Plourde and Hargunn Sandhu; third grader Kaitlyn Stancliff; and fourth graders Aaron Morphew and John Frazier. Melissa Pascarella, Mitchells instructional specialist, coordinated the event.
During the 2007-08 school year, Mitchell raised more than $1,700, and last school year, students, staff and community members raised more than $2,600. For more information on the Math-A-Thon, visit
