LA PLATA, Md. (Jan. 23, 2010) - Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) employees are the top 2009 Campaign donors to the United Way of Charles County. School system employees have pledged $95,639 to the 2009 United Way campaign, up more than $5,000 from $90,092 in 2009. CCPS continues to be the largest contributor in the county.
Dorothy L. Harper, president and CEO of the local United Way, said, “We rely on school system employees as a major part of our campaign. We especially appreciate their generosity this year when the campaign overall is down. For the school system to go over and beyond last year’s contribution is very much appreciated.”
Contributions to United Way support a number of Charles County agencies, many of which are child oriented and assist special populations. This past year, Harper said, the United Way has provided additional support to agencies that deal with food, shelter and other daily living necessities. The food bank is an example of an agency that received additional United Way support last year. “People are coming to our agencies that have never had to ask for help before,” Harper said.
“Once again, school system employees have come through to show their support for our community and to help those in need. Our philosophy is to give back to our community, and I am proud to work with a group of people who give back with both their time and financial resources to make Charles County a better place to live,” Superintendent James E. Richmond said.
“The most important thing is Superintendent Richmond’s support, both personally and through his voice with the school system. Charles County Public Schools support to the United Way is unique. You don’t see this level of help in other places,” Harper said.
Charles County Public Schools provides employees opportunities for payroll deduction and direct donations to the local United Way.
The United Way of Charles County is an independent, locally controlled fundraising organization, one of approximately 1,400 nationwide. It was incorporated in 1983 by a group of Charles County citizens who wanted to consolidate the many worthwhile charitable agencies in the county.
The United Way campaign begins Sept. 1 and runs through the end of the year. However, Harper said, “We will take donations anytime someone wants to give them.”
