LA PLATA, Md. (Jan. 22, 2010) - A team from Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, Vaughans Victors, earned the top spot in the tri-county 2010 Southern Maryland Elementary Computer Bowl held Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Students work in teams to answer 75 knowledge-based questions uploaded to the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) Web site, which sponsors the event. Each team has one hour to complete the questions, which focus on current events, mathematics, science and history.
Team captain is Mitchell fifth grader Justin Cortez. Other members of Vaughans Victors include fifth graders Joseph Patterson and Julia Rivenburg, and fourth graders Caroline Ashburn, Brennan Foster and Jarrod Schmitz. Team alternates are Alexander Gordon, fifth grade, and Theodore Hoxie, fourth grade, and team coach is Sharon Vaughan, Mitchells library media specialist.
Teams from other Charles County public elementary schools placed in the top six of 52 competing teams. The Wade Web-Sters team from William B. Wade Elementary School earned third place overall, and second place in the county standings. The Tiger Time team from Dr. James Craik Elementary School earned fourth place overall, and third place in county standings. Another team from Wade, the Wade Wizards, earned sixth place overall, and earned fourth place in county standings.
A total of 52 teams from 33 schools in Charles, St. Marys and Calvert counties competed in the event.
