Huntingtown Woman Dies in House Fire


CALVERT COUNTY, Md. (January 13, 2010)—A Huntingtown woman died Tuesday afternoon when she was unable to escape her burning home at 300 Sun Park Lane. The fire, which occurred at 3:21 p.m., took the life of seventy-nine year old Genevieve Therese Knight who was home alone at the time of the fire. Upon returning home from shopping, Mrs. Knight’s husband Ralph discovered the house filled with smoke and the smoke alarm sounding. He ran to a neighbor’s and called 911.

Twenty-five firefighters from the Huntingtown, Dunkirk, Prince Frederick and North Beach fire Companies responded to the fire and no firefighters were injured as a result of the incident. The victim was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital and she will be transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for examination.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal and The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire. Damage is estimated at $150,000. Mr. Knight is staying with family.
