State Begins Stimulus Resurfacing Projects in Calvert County

Project Funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

BALTIMORE (May 22, 2009) – Last week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) began resurfacing nearly seven lane miles of MD 260 (Chesapeake Beach Road) from Cornwall Road to the Mt. Harmony Road Bridge. This contract includes seven resurfacing projects in Calvert County funded through Phase I of President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, also known as the federal stimulus plan.

MD 260 extends from MD 4 to MD 261 (Bayside Road) in Calvert County, passing through Anne Arundel County for a short distance. Nearly 13,000 vehicles travel MD 260 per day. Crews have begun patching operations, with milling, resurfacing and restriping to follow. Completion for this segment is expected by mid-June, weather permitting.

Listed below are the remaining resurfacing projects associated with this contract in Calvert County. The estimated start and completion dates are all weather-dependent:

Summer 2009

-- MD 2 (Solomons Island Road) from MD 4 to MD 260 – estimated start mid-June, estimated completion late July (8.6 lane miles).

-- MD 261 from Chesapeake Village/Bayside Road to the US Naval Laboratory (Navy Court) – estimated start early August, estimated completion mid-August (3.2 lane miles).

Fall 2009

-- MD 264 (Broomes Island Road) from Ball Road to Williams Wharf Road – estimated mid-August, estimated completion mid-September (3.9 lane miles).

-- MD 264 from MD 4 to Ball Road – estimated start mid-September, estimated completion mid-October (4 lane miles).

-- MD 2/4 from MD 264 to Parkers Creek – estimated start mid-October, estimated completion late October (0.8 lane mile).

-- MD 760 (Rousby Hall Road) from Olivet Road to Trueman Road – estimated start late October, estimated completion early November (2.1 lane miles).

Under the $6 million project, a total of more than 29 lane miles of state roadway will be resurfaced in Calvert County. Work on all of the resurfacing projects is scheduled to take place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and may involve temporary single lane and shoulder closures. Schedules, dates and work times for all projects are subject to change depending on weather and other factors. The contract was awarded to Reliable Contracting, Inc.
