Sewer Overflow Reported in Lexington Park

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (April 2, 2009)—The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission reported a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred on Monday, March 31, in the area of the Carver Recreation Facility, Lexington Park. The sanitary sewer leak occurred as a result of debris blocking the pipe. Officials estimated the total volume of the overflow as between 8,000 and 10,000 gallons.

The sewage drained into an unnamed stream along Copeland Lane in Lexington Park.

The debris was removed from the pipe and the affected area was vacuumed and limed to minimize contamination.

Officials say the public should avoid contact with the affected portions of this unnamed stream until Monday, April 6.
