Quarterly Nuclear Alert, Warning System Sirens Test Set for April 6

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (March 30, 2009)—The Calvert County Emergency Management Division will conduct a full-cycle test of the alert and warning sirens throughout southern Calvert and St. Mary’s counties on Monday, April 6, at 12 noon. The siren test will consist of a three-minute activation. The testing is part of an emergency evacuation plan in case of a nuclear disaster or other emergency at the nearby Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby.

This three-minute test will be conducted the first Monday of each calendar quarter in 2009 (January, April, July and October). The change in the test schedule is to enhance siren operation and increase public awareness of the Alert and Notification Siren system, say county officials.

If the sirens sound at any other time, emergency officials recommend that residents tune to one of the local radio stations listed below for information and instructions. Citizens can also contact the Calvert County Division of Emergency Management at 410-535-1600, ext. 2638 for additional emergency or disaster preparedness information.
