LA PLATA, Md. (March 27, 2009)—Matthew Lorman, a junior at North Point High School, will represent Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) at the national Skills USA competition in Kansas City in June as a first-place state winner in the Culinary Arts category. Lorman, along with more than 30 other CCPS students, competed at the state competition March 20-21 in Baltimore.

-- Julie Newhart, second place, Preschool Teaching Assistant category, junior, North Point;
-- Abby Vandegrift, third place, Preschool Teaching Assistant category, senior, North Point;
-- Brian Rollins, third place, Welding Fabrication category, junior, North Point;
-- Jonathan Sudik, third place, Welding Fabrication category, senior, North Point; and
-- Jeremy Yoho, third place, Welding Fabrication category, senior, North Point.
The Skills USA/VICA regional competition is a showcase event for career and technology students in the tri-county area. The students compete locally and continue through the state and national levels. The philosophy of the competition is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to train students for employer needs.
