LA PLATA, Md. (March 18, 2009)—More than 550 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed in the regional Destination ImagiNation competition held Saturday, March 14 at North Point High School. Thirty-nine county teams advanced to the state tournament, scheduled for April 18 at Towson University.
Ninety-five teams competed to solve one of five problems in the long-term academic event that challenges students to work together to apply creativity, critical thinking and their unique talents. Teams that placed at the regional event advance to the state tournament.
The following Charles County teams placed in the top five spots at the regional Destination ImagiNation tournament.
Winners in the Operation Cooperation competition are:
-- Elementary: Malcolm Elementary School, first place; William B. Wade Elementary School, second place; Archbishop Neale, third place; Indian Head Elementary School, fourth place; and St. Peter's School, fifth place.
-- Middle: Theodore G. Davis Middle School, first place.
Winners in the Private DI competition are:
-- Elementary: Wade, first place; Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, second place; Dr. James Craik Elementary School, third place; William A. Diggs Elementary School, fourth place; and Wade, fifth place.
-- Middle: Piccowaxen Middle School, first place; John Hanson Middle School, second place; and St. Mary Star of the Sea, third place.
-- High: La Plata High School, first place; Thomas Stone High School, second place; Milton M. Somers and Matthew Henson middle schools, third place; Henry E. Lackey High School, fourth place; and Westlake High School, fifth place.
The team from Somers and Henson competed at the high school level because a team member attends a regional high school.
Winners in the Instinct Messaging Messaging competition are:
-- Elementary: Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, first place; Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, second place; Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School, third place; Higdon, fourth place; and Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy, fifth place.
-- Middle: Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, first place; and Somers, second place.
Winners in the Vidio Lit Hits competition are:
-- Elementary: Arthur Middleton Elementary School, first place; Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School, tie for first place; Diggs, second place; J.C. Parks Elementary School, tie for second place; and Jenifer, third place.
-- Middle: Archbishop Neale, first place; and Mattawoman Middle School, second place.
-- High: La Plata, first place.
Winners in the A New Angle competition are:
-- Elementary: Mary B. Neal Elementary School, first place.
-- Middle: Mattawoman and Neal, first place; T.C Martin Elementary School and Somers, second place; and Piccowaxen, third place.
-- High: Maurice J. McDonough High School, first place.
Teams from Mattawoman and Neal, and Martin and Somers competed at the middle-school level because the team was comprised of both elementary and middle school students.
Charles County Public Schools and the Greater Waldorf Jaycees sponsored the event. Destination ImagiNation is an international program dedicated to enhancing the learning skills, creative problem solving skills, team skills, sportsmanship and knowledge of all students.
