St. Mary's Police Announce St. Patrick's Day Checkpoints

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (March 12, 2009)—The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office today joined police in Calvert in announcing sobriety checkpoints next week to coincide with St. Patrick's day on Tuesday March 17. Police did not disclose times or locations, limiting foretelling to "the week of March 16."

Checkpoints and roving patrols in St. Mary's County have typically been established on the Route 235 corridor between Hollywood and Lexington Park and on Route 4 between Route 235 and the bridge to Solomons. Police have also been known to patrol in the areas of popular drinking establishments.

According to a statement released today, "Sobriety Checkpoints are set up to identify impaired drivers ... in an ongoing effort to get drunk drivers off the roadways."

The sheriff's office says the effort is being funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
