PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (March 11, 2009)—The Calvert County Sheriff's Office announced their intention to conduct DUI saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints at various locations throughout the county on dates surrounding the St. Patrick's Day holiday (Tuesday, March 17). Funding is being provided by "Checkpoint Strikeforce," a multi-state initiative to prevent impaired and aggressive driving.
"The purpose of these sobriety checkpoints is to aid deputies in identifying and removing impaired drivers from our roadways," wrote police in a press release. "We believe that a substantial benefit will continue to be gained from the use of sobriety checkpoints. Increasing the impaired driver's perceived risk of detection may deter him or her from driving while under the influence or while impaired by alcohol or drugs."
