St. Mary's County Sheriff's Reports


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (March 5, 2009) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office recently released the following incident and arrest reports.

FIRST, SECOND DEGREE ASSAULT: On March 3, 2009 Deputies responded to a residence on Carefree Way in Great Mills for a report of an assault. Investigation revealed Joseph Louis Herbert Jr., 53, of Mechanicsville, was involved in a verbal dispute with the victim which escalated into a physical assault when Herbert struck the victim in the head with a frying pan. Herbert then threw a glass ashtray which struck the victim in the head and broke. Joseph Herbert Jr. was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault.

UNDERAGE TOBACCO COMPLIANCE CHECKS: On February 28 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Corporals Emory Johnson and Chad Hartzell of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, along with a 15-year-old confidential informant, conducted underage controlled buys for tobacco products at various businesses in the Chaptico, 7th District and Leonardtown areas. Fourteen establishments were visited. No sales of tobacco products were made to the underage informant by any of the establishments. The establishments which were checked and passed the controlled buy were: Stone's Store, Village Liquors, Chaptico Market, Quade's Store, Captain Sam's, Murphy's Town and Country Market, Potomac Gardens, Leonardtown CVS Pharmacy, Leonardtown McKay's, Leonardtown Foodlion, Center Liquors, Leonardtown Rite Aid, Leonardtown Dash-In and Leonardtown Sunoco.

UNDERAGE TOBACCO COMPLIANCE CHECKS: On February 22 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Corporals Emory Johnson and Charles Earle of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office along with a 16-year-old confidential informant conducted underage controlled buys for tobacco products at various business establishments in northern St. Mary's County. Eighteen establishments were visited. No sales of tobacco products were made to the underage informant by any of the establishments. The establishments which were checked and passed the controlled buy were: the Mechanicsville WaWa's, Mechanicsville 7-11, Mechanicsville Burchmart, Cartwright's Texaco, Charlotte Hall 7-11, Fred's Liquors, Charlotte Hall Dash In, Charlotte Hall Rite Aid, Charlotte Hall Food Lion, Charlotte Hall WaWa's, McKay's Charlotte Hall, Light House Liquors, Charlotte Hall Subway, South Bound 7-11 Charlotte Hall, New Market Service Center, DJ's One Stop, Hill's Tobacco and Liquor and the Third Base Store.
