LEONARDTOWN, Md. (March 5, 2009)—Police have released the names of the adults
involved in this morning's fatal accident.
The deceased is Blanche Cecil Laungayan, 60, of Callaway.
The driver of the second vehicle, who struck Laungayan as she pulled out on Hollywood Road at the entrance to the SMECO facility, was identified as Corporal Milton Pesante, 35, of the sheriff's office.
Pesante was not injured in the accident.
An earlier statement from police indicated that Pesante was on-duty at the time of the accident. Pesante is a seven year veteran of the sheriff's office.
Laungayan was operating a 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and was struck in the area of the driver's side door and front quarter by Pesante's 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV.
Laungayan was ejected from the Toyota and pronounced dead at the scene.
A three-year boy from Leonardtown was a passenger in Laungayan's vehicle. He was initially transported to St. Mary's Hospital but has subsequently been flown to Children's Hospital in Washington, DC.
Unconfirmed reports identify the child as the woman's grandson.
In the statement just released, police said that Laungayan "failed to yield the right of way and was stuck by the Chevrolet."
Police have not released the estimated speed of Pesante's vehicle when he struck the Toyota.
