Indian Head NSWC Recognizes Calverton Company for STEM Project

CALVERTON, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Macro International was recently recognized by the Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center with the 2008 Roger M. Smith Team Award for the "Go Places! With Math and Science," a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) initiative. Macro collaborated with Charles County school teachers and Indian Head Division subject matter experts to develop career pipeline lessons for elementary, middle, and high school students.

The Roger M. Smith Team Award recognizes collaboration efforts that meet customer needs by providing products or services, ultimately resulting in improved organizational performance and increased effectiveness.

These activity-based lessons are integrated into the classroom to encourage children to consider careers in STEM fields. Pat Dzieszkowski, Macro’s Senior Technical Director, stated that “Indian Head Division scientists and engineers use these interactive modules when they are invited to the Charles County Public Schools to talk about their work. This pipeline initiative is one approach to helping the Navy meet future workforce needs.”

In support of this collaborative initiative, Macro developed activity lessons, teacher guides, student worksheets, evaluations, brochures, posters, portable display units, and a website (http://www.ih.navy.mil/goplaces/default.asp).

This pipeline initiative has been showcased at the 2008 NAVSEA Diversity Summit as a benchmark for other Navy organizations, and has been recognized by Congressman Mike Honda as a model for how STEM funding is used.
