LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Feb. 11, 2009)—The Board of Education of St. Mary's County today announced the reappointment of Dr. Michael J. Martirano to a new four year term as superintendent of schools. Dr. Martirano's current four year contract expires on June 30, 2009. As an incumbent superintendent, the Board is required to publicly act to reappoint Dr. Martirano to a new term by March 1 of the final year of his contract in accordance with Maryland public education law.
Dr. Martirano has served as superintendent of schools for St. Mary's County since July 2005. His new term will begin on July 1, 2009, and concludes on June 30, 2013.
"I am honored and appreciative that the Board of Education has renewed my contract as superintendent" said Dr. Martirano in a statement.
"Dr. Martirano has demonstrated his effectiveness as a leader in such a short period of time," said Mr. William M. Mattingly, chairman of the Board of Education, in a statement. "This school system has benefited tremendously from his leadership, and this Board is committed to continuing our journey with him as he takes us from good to great."
