Cheltenham Man Charged in Arson of His Vehicle

LA PLATA, Md. (Feb. 4, 2009)—Deputy State Fire Marshals have arrested a Cheltenham man in connection with the arson of his vehicle. Craig Marquis White, 38, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his part-time employer without incident.

White was charged with setting his 2001 Mercedes S430 passenger car on fire on September 8, 2008 near the 6000 Block of Exchange Drive, La Plata. Investigators determined that White poured an ignitable liquid inside of the cars passenger compartment and set it on fire. The fire burned itself out and resulted in $15,000 damage to the vehicle. Insurance fraud was determined to have been the motive for setting the fire.

A Charles County Grand Jury issue an indictment for White on Friday for second degree arson, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit arson and insurance fraud. He is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner to establish bond.
