LA PLATA, Md. (Jan. 22, 2009)—Students at Milton M. Somers Middle School recently donated more than $1,600 to the American Heart Association's Hoops for Heart fundraiser campaign.
Students donated funds through pledge donations and school sporting events held last month. The check was presented Jan. 12 to Lisa Baynes, the Maryland youth marketing director for the American Heart Association.
"Somers has consistently been champions in the middle schools for Charles County. All the money they raised will go to fighting heart disease and strokes. It will also be used for grants for continued research. The Somers community has done a wonderful job," Baynes said.
Two students, seventh grader Lakota Purcell and eighth grader Amanda McCourt, raised more than $150 each and are eligible for a special drawing for a trip to Walt Disney World, Florida.
The fundraiser was organized by Somers physical education teacher Charles Jamieson.
