Hoyer Announces Staff Changes


Stacey Bernards to Serve as Deputy Chief of Staff, Katie Grant and Stephanie Lundberg Assume New Spokesperson Responsibilities

WASHINGTON (Jan. 22, 2009) – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced Wednesday that he is promoting Stacey Farnen Bernards, his Communications Director and Senior Advisor, to Deputy Chief of Staff. In addition, two members of his communications staff, Stephanie Lundberg and Katie Grant, will become his primary spokespersons and assume new responsibilities in working with the media and Member offices.

“Stacey Bernards has been an important member of my staff for eight years,” said Hoyer. “In this new role, she will use her knowledge of the media, policy, and the Hill to assist me, the House Leadership and the Democratic Caucus advance and communicate our agenda in coordination with the new Obama Administration. Stacey will work closely with my Chief of Staff, Terry Lierman, my Policy Director, Michele Stockwell, and my entire staff to bring about the change that America voted for in November.”

“Stephanie Lundberg and Katie Grant are valued members of my staff,” added Hoyer. “They are both skilled communications professionals, and will do an excellent job of working with the media and Member offices in both their new and continuing responsibilities.”

Stacey Farnen Bernards has worked for Hoyer since February 2001, when he was Ranking Member on the House Administration Committee. She was part of the team that helped Hoyer join the ranks of the House Democratic Leadership, first as Democratic Whip in 2002, and then as Majority Leader in 2006. As his Communications Director and Senior Advisor, Stacey has been Hoyer’s spokesperson and communications strategist, as well as advised him on legislative and political issues. She began her Capitol Hill career working for Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey as Staff Assistant, then moved up to Deputy Press Secretary. Stacey graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Foreign Affairs and French. Originally from Detroit, she lives in Washington, DC with her husband John, a Financial Planner, and her two children, Colette and Jack.

Stephanie Lundberg has served as Hoyer’s Press Secretary since January 2007, managing his Maryland press, and more recently covering health and housing issues in his leadership office. For three years prior she was the Press Secretary for Congressman Ron Kind of Wisconsin. Her communications experience also includes work on several political campaigns. Stephanie graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in Communication Arts and is a native of the Chicago area. In the leadership press office Stephanie will serve as spokeswoman for health care, energy and the environment, housing, politics, business and technology, transportation, labor, agriculture and veterans issues. In addition, she will continue to manage Hoyer’s Maryland press.

Katie Grant has been with Hoyer for three years, starting when he was Democratic Whip and moving to his campaign office for the 2006 election before going to the Majority Leader’s Office, first as Press Assistant and then as Deputy Press Secretary. Katie will serve as spokeswoman on the Floor schedule, economy, fiscal issues (tax, budget, appropriations), national security and foreign policy, education, immigration, trade, ethics, and election reform. Originally from Atlanta, she earned a B.S. in International Affairs from Georgia Tech and an M.A. in Political Science from American University.
