LA PLATA, Md. (Dec. 30, 2009) - The Charles County Sheriff's Office today released the following incident and arrest reports.
FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT/RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT: On December 28 at 4:10 p.m., officers responded to Popes Creek Road near Dewberry Drive in Newburg for the report of shots fired. Investigation revealed the victim was driving up his driveway when he observed the suspect, Robert "Bobby" Hayden, 38, of Newburg, inside a car pointing a shotgun at him. The victim put his car in reverse and started backing up when he heard a gun shot and saw Hayden leaving at a high rate of speed. Sheriff's officers responded to the scene and located the suspect at his house. Officers also recovered a 12 gauge shotgun shell. Officers learned the victim and suspect, who are related, have had an ongoing dispute. Hayden was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment. Officer A. STRONG-ARM ROBBERY: On December 28 at 4:12 p.m., officers responded to 11110 Mall Circle for the report of a robbery. Investigation revealed the victim - an 18-year-old male - was withdrawing money from an ATM located inside the mall when two females approached, grabbed him from behind and stole the money. Both suspects fled on foot. The victim described the suspects as black females in their teens. One suspect was wearing a pink coat and the other suspect was wearing a brown coat. Sergeant J.S. Powell is investigating.
THEFT FROM AUTOS: On December 28 at 1 p.m., officers responded to the 3200 block of Mattawoman Beantown Road in Waldorf for the report of thefts from autos. Investigation revealed sometime between 7 a.m. - 1 p.m., unknown suspects forced entry into five cars parked in the area and stole GPS units, IPods, currency and other loose items. Officer L. Elliot is investigating.
TEENS CHARGED WITH DRUG POSSESSION: On December 28 at 12:27 a.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers observed a suspicious vehicle parked behind near a business in the 9300 block of Chesapeake Street in La Plata. Upon approaching the car, officers observed marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the car. The occupants, Jarret Land, 19, of La Plata and two 17-year-old males of La Plata were charged with possession of drugs.
MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING POLICE OFFICER DURING DWI ARREST: On December 27 at 1:27 a.m., a Charles County Sheriff's officer initiated a traffic stop in the 600 block of Charles Street in La Plata after observing a violation. The officer determined the driver, Michael Anthony Hilton Jr, 22, of Mechanicsville, was intoxicated. As the officer placed Hilton under arrest, Hilton spit on the officer and kicked the side of the officer's car. Hilton was subdued and charged with DWI, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Officer R. Brooks made the arrest.
MAN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT: On December 26 at 11:50 p.m., officers responded to the 6200 block of Brandywine Road in Hughesville for an assault in which a knife was used. Investigation revealed the victim - 49-year-old man - and suspect, Ray Williams Dempsey, 34, of Eagle Harbor, were arguing when Dempsey pulled a knife and threatened the victim. Dempsey fled but was later arrested and charged with first-degree assault. Officer L. Sershen is investigating.
BURGLARY: On December 23 at 9 p.m., officers responded to the 7800 block of Bensville Road in Waldorf for the report of a burglary. Investigation revealed unknown suspects broke into a house and stole money and other small items. Corporal C. Strafella is investigating.
