COLUMBIA, Md. (Sept. 22, 2009) - St. Marys Hospital, the largest private employer and only hospital in St. Marys County, has merged with MedStar Health, the regions largest nonprofit healthcare system. St. Marys Hospital is the ninth hospital in MedStar Healths network and the first hospital in the Southern Maryland region to join the healthcare system.
"We are excited to partner with MedStar Health," says Christine R. Wray, president of St. Mary's Hospital. "Our partnership highlights shared values, a community focus, as well as our joint commitment to the highest quality care. MedStar offers us world-renowned expertise and resources. We look forward to being a part of MedStar Health as St. Mary's Hospital grows to meet the needs of our rapidly expanding community."
The community will benefit from the merger, as St. Marys Hospital will have additional opportunities in, and access to, medical teaching and residency programs, clinical trials, research programs, physician recruitment and outpatient treatment programs through MedStar Health. St. Marys Hospital already has an established relationship with MedSTAR Transport, as well as Washington Hospital Center, which will both be expanded upon as a result of the merger.
St. Marys patient-first culture and service area are complementary to MedStar Health and will allow us to expand our long-standing partnership with St. Marys, says MedStar Health President and CEO Kenneth A. Samet. Together we will build upon St. Marys well-established programs with new resources and opportunities for collaborative clinical programming to accelerate growth, while expanding services and continuing to build on its commitment to quality.
St. Marys Hospital was recently recognized with the 2009 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement and joins three other MedStar hospitals in receiving this distinction. In addition, St. Mary's Hospital was the first hospital in Southern Maryland to implement a fully integrated electronic medical records system, a barcode medication administration device and computerized physician order entry.
St. Mary's Hospital is a 103-bed, full-service hospital, delivering state-of-the-art emergency, acute inpatient and outpatient care.
MedStar Health is a $3.8 billion non-profit healthcare organization and a community-based network of nine hospitals and other healthcare services across Maryland and in the Washington, D.C., region.
