PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (June 22, 2009)—The Calvert County Board of Education and the Calvert Association of Educational Support Staff have reached a tentative agreement on revisions to the final year of the current three-year employment contract, according to a joint statement released today. Both parties say the revisions were made because the revenue for Calvert County public schools for FY 2010 was significantly less than what was anticipated when the contract was originally negotiated in 2007.
The highlights of the tentative revisions are:
-- A 0.5% salary adjustment for all support staff for 2009-10 (the original agreement called for a 4.5% adjustment);
-- All eligible employees will continue to receive step increases;
-- Individual contributions for health insurance benefits will remain at the fiscal year 2009 contract level; and
-- A one-time payment of 1% of their base salary will be paid to all of the association's most senior members. By contract, these employees are not eligible to receive step increases.
The members of the Calvert Association of Educational Support Staff will meet on Tuesday, June 23, to vote on whether to ratify the contract addendum. If the association membership ratifies the revised contract, the proposal will be presented to the Board of Education for consideration and ratification.
"The two negotiating teams emphasize that a strong, collaborative effort produced a proposal that supports employees while allowing the school system to continue to provide quality educational services to students," according to today's joint statement.
