LA PLATA, Md. (June 16, 2009)—Mary B. Neal Elementary School was recently recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as Charles County Public Schools top contributor for the Harvest for the Hungry Kids Helping Kids food drive campaign.
Neal students collected 1,453 pounds of food during the campaign. The campaign is a three-week service learning project held each fall and provides students with the opportunity to learn about hunger while collecting food for their local food banks. The food banks then distribute the food to children in need across the state.
Students across Maryland collected 413,129 pounds of food and more than $56,000 for food banks statewide. Each of the 571 participating schools will receive a set of books for their efforts. All participating schools were recognized by MSDE at a May 14 luncheon.
