Passenger Jumps from Moving Vehicle, Driver Flees


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (June 2, 2009) - The St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) today released the following incident and arrest reports. BCI is an investigative team comprised of detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack. The unit was established on July 1, 2003 and is based in Leonardtown.

PASSENGER JUMPS FROM MOVING VEHICLE: On June 1 at approximately 9:30 pm., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on northbound Route 235 in California. The driver, Fernando Garcia, age 27, with no fixed address, fled the scene, however returned a short time later. It was determined that the victim, Kimberly Figgins, age 20, of Mechanicsville, jumped from the moving vehicle and traveled approximately 75-100 feet along the roadway. She was flown to Prince Georges County Shock Trauma for her injuries by Trooper 7 and is listed in stable condition. St. Mary's County BCI detectives responded and assumed the investigation. Garcia was charged with driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident. He was incarcerated at the St. Mary's County Detention Center. The investigation is continuing.
