Charles County Sheriff's Reports


LA PLATA, Md. (May 28, 2009) - The Charles County Sheriff's Office recently released the following incident and arrest reports.

ASSAULT ON INDIAN HEAD RAIL TRAIL: On May 17 at 4 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to the Indian Head Rail Trail near Parker Harley Place in Indian Head for the report of an assault. Investigation revealed the victim, 24, was jogging on the trail when an unknown suspect ran up behind her and pushed her to the ground. The victim fought off the assailant and he fled into the woods. Officers responded immediately and canvassed the area. The victim did not get a good look at her attacker and it's unclear what the motive was. Anyone with information is asked to call the District II Station at (301) 743-2222.

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH: On May 25 at 11:41 p.m., Lewis Oscar Moon, 65, of La Plata, was driving north in the 900 block of Washington Avenue in La Plata when he drifted off the roadway and struck a telephone pole, causing the vehicle to overturn. Moon was transported to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later. Officer S. Stanley of the Traffic Operations Unit is handling the investigation.

DRUG ARREST: On May 28 at 12:58 a.m., a Charles County Sheriff's officer was conducting a routine patrol check at the Smallwood Park and Ride in Waldorf when he observed a male in the parking lot. Upon approaching the male, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana. The subject was checked and the officer found three bags of marijuana in the male's pocket. As the officer initiated an arrest, the subject pulled away and a struggled ensued. The suspect, a juvenile male, was eventually subdued and charged with resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. Officer M. Hancock made the arrest.

MAN CHARGED WITH DWI AND POSSESSION OF DRUGS: On May 27 at 1 a.m., officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Crain Highway at Berry Road in Waldorf after observing the driver of a vehicle failing to drive right of center and following another vehicle too closely. Upon stopping the car, the driver, Christopher Jermar White, 31, of Lanham, was arrested after it was determined he was intoxicated. Officers also found marijuana in the car. White was charged with DWI, DUI, possession with intent to distribute drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officer T. Yates made the arrest.

TEEN CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF STOLEN HANDGUN: On May 26 at 5:35 p.m., officers were conducting foot patrol on the bike paths near Drake Court in Waldorf when they stopped a suspicious subject who was found to be in possession of a 45 caliber Ruger handgun. A computer check revealed the gun was reported stolen in February. The subject, a 15-year-old Waldorf male, was arrested and charged with possession of a concealed deadly weapon and theft. Officer R. Kimble made the arrest.

MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT: On May 26 at 4:47 p.m., officers responded to the La Plata Public Library for the report of an assault. Investigation revealed the suspect, Ronnie Jerome Hawkins, 47, of La Plata, approached a female inside the library and groped her. He fled but was located a short distance away. A warrant was issued and Hawkins was later arrested and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault.
