LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Dec. 31, 2008) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office this week released the following incident and arrest reports.
FIRST DEGREE ASSAULT: On December 28, 2008 the victim responded to the residence of her former boyfriend Robert Carlton Burns, Jr., 58 of Leonardtown, to pick up personal belongings. Once at the residence, a dispute ensued over property at which time Mr. Burns pointed a handgun and threatened to shoot the victim if she did not leave the residence. Burns also pointed the gun at two other persons who were at the residence to help the victim. Burns was arrested and charged with three counts of first degree assault, three counts of reckless endangerment, and one count of second degree assault.
SECOND DEGREE ASSAULT: On December 27, 2008 Deputy M. Licausi responded to a residence on Orchid Lane in Lexington Park for an assault. Investigation revealed the victim was in a verbal dispute with Kenneth Edward Lyles, 50, of Lexington Park, which escalated into a physical altercation when Lyles bit the victim on the neck. Lyles was arrested and charged with second degree assault.
FAILING TO OBEY LAWFUL ORDER, DISORDERLY CONDUCT: On December 27, 2008 Deputy R. Nielson responded to Flower Drive in Lexington Park for a disturbance. Deputy Nielson met the owner of the residence who asked that Kevin Eugene Watts, 44, and Mary Agnes Morgan, 38, both of no fixed address, be told to leave the property as they were no longer welcome. Deputy Nielson instructed Mr. Watts and Ms. Morgan to leave the residence, and they initially complied. As Deputy Nielson was returned to his cruiser, he observed Watts and Morgan return to the residence. Deputy Neilson contacted Watts and Morgan who began yelling obscenities causing a disturbance heard by neighbors. Kevin Watts and Mary Morgan were arrested and charged with failing to obey a lawful order of a police officer and disorderly conduct.
SUSPECTED COCAINE: On December 28, 2008 Deputy R. Nielson stopped an Acura driven by Luis nmn Barrera-Sarceno, 23, of Great Mills, for a traffic violation. Mr. Barrera-Sarceno did not appear to understand English and could not produce a driver's license. Mr. Barrera-Sarceno was asked to exit the vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle Barrera-Sarceno continuously put his hands in his pockets which caused an officer's safety concern for Deputy Nielson. Deputy Nielson conducted a pat down on Barrera-Sarceno for his safety. Deputy Nielson felt what he believed to be a weapon in Barrera-Sarceno's left front pocket. Deputy Nielson reached into the pocket and pulled out a cell phone and plastic baggie containing suspected powered cocaine. Barrera-Sarceno was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
ILLEGAL DRUGS: On December 28, 2008 Corporal Edward Evans responded to Military Drive in Lexington Park for a report of a large fight in progress. Communications also dispatched information that numerous persons were in the roadway and vehicles were attempting to run over people. Once in the area, Corporal Evans observed a vehicle traveling in reverse in the middle of the road towards Military Drive. Cpl. Evans believed the vehicle may be involved in the incident, so he stopped the vehicle. The driver was identified as Corduero Lasale Moore, 20, of no fixed address. While speaking to Mr. Moore, Corporal Evans could detect an odor of burnt marijuana emitting from Mr. Moore's person and the vehicle. A warrant check also revealed an open warrant for Mr. Moore's arrest. A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed numerous packaged baggies of marijuana. Corduero Moore was arrested, served with the open warrant, and charged with possession of marijuana.
ILLEGAL DRUGS: On Dec. 30, Deputy Vezzosi initiated a traffic stop on a 1993 Mazda. Upon making contact with the occupants, Deputy Vezzosi smelled the strong odor of burnt marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle. DFC. Whipkey arrived on the scene and approached the passenger side of the vehicle where he observed two clear capsules in the center console. The driver provided a name to the deputy but did not have a driver's license in his possession. It was later determined the driver lied about his identity and his real name was Montez Wayne Chase, 18, of Lexington Park. Chase was wanted on an outstanding Maryland State Police warrant. A search of the vehicle revealed used hypodermic needles, two spoons containing suspected controlled dangerous substance residue, a straw with white powder residue (suspected cocaine) and a marijuana grinder. The registered owner of the vehicle, Anita Katherine Emory, 20 of California, was also in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed the controlled dangerous substances and paraphernalia belonged to Ms. Emory. Ms. Emory also possessed a small baggie containing suspected marijuana on her person. Ms. Emory was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. Mr. Chase was arrested on the outstanding warrant.
4TH DEGREE BURGLARY: On December 29, 2008 Sdfc. Russell observed Michael Anthony Watson, 30, no fixed address rummaging through a dumpster on Tulagi Place in Lexington Park. The Deputy interviewed Mr. Watson and discovered Mr. Watson had broken into and was living in a storage shed belonging to Vintage Value in Lexington Park. Mr. Watson was arrested and charged with 4th degree burglary.
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN: On Dec. 30 at approximately 6:00 pm James Aubrey Mattingly Jr., 42, of Leonardtown, was attempting to cross southbound Route 5 across from the Breton Marketplace shopping center. Mattingly was not crossing at a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing. He was struck by a 2004 Jeep Wrangler driven by Kelli Devine, 18, of Columbia, Md. which was traveling in the right hand southbound lane. Mr. Mattingly was flown to Prince George's County Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police Trooper 7, with life threatening injuries. He was then transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He has since been upgraded stable condition.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team is continuing the investigation. Initial investigation reveals pedestrian error contributed to the collision. At this time speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact DFC Timothy Reese at 301-475-4200 ext. 9115.
VIOLATION OF A PROTECTIVE ORDER: On December 29, 2008 Jeremiah Jerrard Watson, 31 of Leonardtown, was served with a warrant charging him with violating the conditions of a protective order on November 24, 2008. Mr. Watson is incarcerated in the St. Mary's County Detention Center.
