Jeremiah J. Watson, 31, of Leonardtown, is in a hospital after being shot by his ex-girlfriend early Monday morning.  Police say Watson broke into the woman's home and killed her boyfriend using a shovel and a gun—the latter of which he wrestled away from the woman after she shot him in self-defense. Charges are expected soon.
LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Nov. 24, 2008)—One man is dead and his attacker is in the hospital with gunshot wounds after an early morning home invasion on Premier Lane in Lexington Park. The suspect, Jeremiah J. Watson, 31, of Leonardtown, broke into the home of his former girlfriend, Tina L. Dean, according to police. Dean had a current protective order against Watson.

The deceased victim is Christopher M. Patty, 34, of Charles County. Patty was a guest in the home.

Police were called to the residence at approximately 4 a.m.

Police say Watson forced open a door to the home using a shovel. Once inside Watson allegedly attacked Patty with the shovel.

Dean told police she retrieved a .22 caliber handgun and shot Watson. Watson subsequently struck her several times with the shovel and took the gun away from her. Watson then shot Patty and attempted to shoot Dean, but the weapon may have malfunctioned, say police.

Watson then fled the residence and was located by police lying in an area near the home suffering from his injuries. Watson was flown to Prince George's Shock Trauma by Trooper 7.

Patty was transported to St. Mary's Hospital where he died.

Dean was treated at St. Mary's Hospital and later released.

Dean had a current protective order against Watson. Watson had been arrested on November 20 for violation of the order.

Charges against Watson are pending.

Police say three children parented by Dean and Watson reside in the home.
