HOLLYWOOD, Md. (Dec. 2, 2007)—St. Mary's County dentist Dr. John Timothy Modic recently presented the Greenwell Foundation with a check for $7,975 for the Therapeutic Riding Program. Modic and his colleague, Sharmin Meraj, operate their office on Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville. Last year, Dr. Modic contributed $10,000 to the TRP.
Modic designated Greenwell as his charity of choice in a fundraising effort through the Crown Council. Modic raised money for the Council's charitable organization for children, the Smiles for Life Foundation. Smiles for Life helps children with serious health conditions and educational deficiencies.
Each year over a four-month period, Crown Council dentists participating in the Smiles for Life campaign offer professional tooth whitening for less than their normal fee, donate their time to perform the work, and then donate 100% of the proceeds to children's charities throughout the United States and Canada.
According to their website, the Crown Council is a alliance of leading-edge dentists throughout the United States and Canada who are strongly committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer and serving their communities through charitable work.
The donation represents half of the funds Dr. Modic raised this year. The other half of Dr. Modic's total donations will be distributed to children's charities throughout North America.
Modic's wife, Faith, is an avid equestrian and owns several horses. Modic heard about Greenwell's Therapeutic Riding Program (TRP) and decided it was the best recipient for his donation.
The TRP is designed for individuals with developmental, physical or emotional challenges. Greenwell officials say the program focuses on ability rather than disability. It began in 1999 with only a few volunteers, horses, and riders, and has grown into the largest such program in Southern Maryland. Since its inception the program has reached over 800 participants.
The Greenwell Foundation is located in Hollywood, Md. along the Patuxent River.
