Trial for P.G. County Cop Begins in St. Mary's


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Oct. 28, 2008)—The criminal trial for Prince George's County police officer Scott W. Campbell began Monday morning in St. Mary's County Circuit Court in Leonardtown. Campbell is charged with negligent manslaughter after an incident in May 2007 on the Capital Beltway resulted in two deaths and 15 other injuries. Campbell allegedly caused the accidents while chasing a motorcycle at speeds exceeding 120 mph.

The case was moved from Prince George's County on Oct. 22.

The case is being prosecuted by three assistant State's attorneys from Prince George's County.

Campbell is being defended by Michael J. Belsky of Schlachman, Belsky & Weiner, P.A. in Baltimore.

Attorneys have estimated that the trial will take four days.
