LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Oct. 28, 2008)—Steven Maurice Grove, 44, of Frederick, Maryland took police in St. Mary's County on a short chase early Tuesday morning. Trooper Pilkerton of the Leonardtown Barrack tried to stop Grove for traffic violations around 12:20 a.m. Police say Grove refused to stop and a chase ensued.
Trooper Pilkerton first encountered Grove on eastbound Route 4 east of Route 235 in California, St. Mary's County. Grove was driving a 1988 Dodge Ram truck.
TFC Stern and Trooper Koock deployed stop sticks on Route 4 which subsequently deflated tires on Grove's truck, according to a press release issued by the MSP this morning. As troopers attempted to box-in Grove's vehicle, police say Grove intentionally attempted to ram Corporal Peck's vehicle. The attempt was unsuccessful.
Corporal Peck, driving patrol car T-18, avoided the collision but was forced into another patrol car, designated MSP AV-40, which was operated by aviation medic TFC Gill, say police. Both MSP vehicles sustained minor damage.
Grove was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention Center where he was charged and detained pending a bond review. Criminal charges include assault, first and second degree.
According to Maryland court records, Grove has a long history of criminal and traffic violations dating back to 1991. His court cases span district courts in Calvert, Charles, St Mary's, Frederick, and Washington counties.
