St. Mary's County Sheriff's Reports


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Oct. 24, 2008) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office recently released the following incident and arrest reports.

UNDERCOVER ALCOHOL ENFORCEMENT OPERATION: On 10/23/08 between the hours of 1300 and 1600, SDFC Robert Russell and SDFC Emory Johnson of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office conducted an undercover CSAFE and Alcohol Enforcement Operation in the Lexington Park area in order to enforce laws against consuming alcoholic beverages in public areas. The deputies were patrolling the rear parking lot of Millison Plaza when they observed Kenneth Winters, 50, of Lexington Park drinking from a can which was partially concealed in a brown paper bag. The deputies approached Mr. Winters and smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person. A closer inspection of the can concealed in the bag revealed that it was an alcoholic beverage. Mr. Winters was cited for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage on adjacent mall and parking area of a retail establishment.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: Vice narcotics detectives began an investigation into the distribution of crack cocaine related to a residence off Lucca Way in Lexington Park. The suspect was identified as Vashon Lamar Hayden, age 25. A search and seizure warrant was obtained for the residence and suspect Hayden's body. Cocaine was recovered from the suspect's person and prescription medication was recovered from the home. Hayden was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. Additional charges are expected against Hayden and a second suspect, pending a State's Attorney's Office review.

THEFT ARREST: BCI detectives investigating the breaking and entering of two vehicles and a theft from one on Green Gables Court in Mechanicsville on October 15, arrested Mark T. Grove, 23, of Mechanicsville, on October 22. Detectives determined that Grove committed the crimes and stole a credit card in the process. He used the card at the Mechanicsville Burchmart to purchase items. Grove was charged with theft, breaking and entering of motor vehicles, malicious destruction of property, misrepresentation of a credit card to obtain goods, identity theft, and defrauding the store with a credit card. He was incarcerated at the St. Mary's County Detention Center.

FIRST DEGREE ASSAULT: On October 19, Deputy M. Campbell responded to a domestic disturbance on Lady Baltimore Avenue in Leonardtown. Investigation revealed Lucy Lynn Hammett, 41, of Leonardtown, was in a verbal dispute which escalated into a physical assault where she stabbed the victim with a screw driver in the back. The victim suffered a laceration to the upper back area. Lucy Hammett was arrested and charged with first degree assault.

SECOND DEGREE ASSAULT: On October 21, deputies responded to a domestic dispute on Macon Court in Great Mills. Investigation revealed Todd Conley Gray, 21, of Great Mills, was in a verbal dispute which escalated into a physical assault where he assaulted the victim by choking her. Mr. Gray was arrested and charged with second degree assault.

INDECENT EXPOSURE: On October 21, at the intersection of Midway Drive and Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, Senior Deputy First Class P. Handy witnessed Melody Lynn Bowen, 42, of Lexington Park, stand up, pull her pants down, squat (exposing her buttock), and urinate on the pavement. Ms. Bowen was arrested for indecent exposure.
