Four Men Indicted In Cocaine Conspiracy


GREENBELT, Md. (Sept. 15, 2008) - A grand jury has indicted Tyron Anthony Butler, a/k/a “Red Dog,” age 29, of Lexington Park; Laray Anthony Maddox, a/k/a “Ray Ray,” age 26, of Callaway; Joseph Aloysius Maddox, a/k/a “Junior Maddox,” age 41, of Great Mills; and James Robert Shade, a/k/a “Buck Shade,” age 31, of Lexington Park, for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and related charges, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. The indictment was returned on September 8, 2008 and unsealed today upon the arrests of the defendants.

According to the 16 count indictment, from July 2004 through September 2008, the defendants conspired to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine and 50 grams or more of crack cocaine in the Leonardtown and Lexington Park areas of St. Mary’s County. According to information presented in court, over the course of the investigation agents made several controlled purchases of powder and crack cocaine and conducted surveillance of the defendants’ activities at locations in St. Mary’s County.

All the defendants face a maximum sentence of life in prison on the conspiracy charge; and 40 years in prison for distribution of and possession with intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine. Joseph Maddox and Laray Maddox also face a maximum sentence of five years in prison for use of a cellular telephone in committing and facilitating the narcotics conspiracy.

The defendants had their initial appearances in federal district court in Greenbelt beginning at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11 and were detained. Laray Maddox, Tyron Butler and Robert Shade have detention hearings scheduled on September 15, 2008 beginning at 1:45 p.m., and Joseph Maddox has a detention hearing scheduled on September 16, 2008, all before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles B. Day.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.
