WALDORF, Md. (July 18, 2008)—The Chaney Foundation Board of Directors today announced the award of six scholarships to students throughout Southern Maryland.
The Chaney Foundation says they established the scholarships in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s Counties for the purpose of furthering a student in a major related to the building trades, with focus on the fields of drafting, construction management, concrete industry management, engineering, architecture or business. Awarded on a competitive basis, each student will receive $1,000. Scholarships are renewable up to $4,000.
Devin Bohanan of California and Steven Smith of Chesapeake Beach have been awarded first-year scholarships.
Bohanan graduated from Leonardtown High School this spring and will study engineering. He has been accepted to both University of Maryland, College Park and Virginia Tech. Bohanan accepted the latter offer.
Smith graduated from Huntingtown High School and has worked as a draftsman in Calvert County. He has been accepted to West Virginia University and Virginia Tech and will major in architectural engineering.
Scholarship renewals were granted to Michael Falls of Towson, Octavia Green and Latrina Alston, both of Waldorf.
A senior at Towson University, Falls is majoring in accounting/economics with a focus on international business law.
Green is a sophomore in Business at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Alston is a junior at Hampton University in Newport News, VA., and is majoring in architecture.
The Chaney Foundation also established the Leo Curtis Memorial Scholarship to benefit children of Chaney Enterprises’ employees. Ralph “Leo” Curtis was a concrete mixer driver for Chaney Enterprises for 12 years. Company officials say Curtis was a model professional and the first volunteer for the company’s Mentor Driver Program, who highly valued education and training of others, particularly children and youth on truck driving safety. Curtis died in November 1999.
This year’s recipient is Crossland High School graduate Destiny Stewart of Camp Springs. Stewart is the daughter of Ronnie Stewart, concrete plant manager in Seat Pleasant. Stewart has been accepted to Mount St. Mary’s College and Salisbury University and will major in business administration/international business relations.
“Education has always been a core value for me and my family, and on behalf of the Foundation Board, we are pleased to award this year’s scholarships to such high-achieving young adults,” said Frank Chaney, chairman, the Chaney Foundation.
Chartered in 1987 as a memorial to Eugene Chaney of Lothian who died in 1987, The Chaney Foundation makes gifts, donations or contributions to legitimate charitable organizations who support children and youth; arts, history and culture; education; environment, and health care and education.
