St. Mary's County Sheriff's Reports


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (June 30, 2008) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Department today released the following incident and arrest reports.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: On June 26 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Deputy James Stone was patrolling the Thomas Road area in Piney Point when he spotted Brian Christopher Donnelly, age 29 of Piney Point, walking in an unlit area. Deputy Stone stopped to check Mr. Donnelly's welfare because he appeared to be intoxicated. As Mr. Donnelly attempted to remove his identification from his pocket, Donnelly displayed a baggy of suspected marijuana. Deputy Stone arrested Brian Donnelly for possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Search incident to the arrest revealed a controlled dangerous substance smoking device and suspected powdered cocaine.

OPEN WARRANT, ILLEGAL DRUGS: On June 27 Deputy James Stone responded to a loitering complaint on North Patuxent Beach Road in California. On the way to the complaint Deputy Stone observed a Toyota Corolla parked on the corner of West Patuxent Beach Road and North Patuxent Beach Road. The vehicle's headlights were on and the vehicle was running. Deputy Stone observed the operator of the vehicle leave a wooded area, return to the vehicle and attempt to drive off. The operator was identified as Justin Marcus Karwoski, age 26 of Great Mills. Deputy Stone contacted Mr. Karwoski who was sweating profusely and appeared to be extremely nervous. Deputy Stone could also detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage upon his breath and person. A warrant check of Justin Karwoski determined him to be wanted by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Karwoski was arrested on the open warrant. Search incident to the arrest revealed suspected heroin.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: On June 28 at approximately 3:54 a.m. Deputy First Class Keith Moritz was patrolling the area of Route 237 and Robinson Lane in Great Mills when he observed a vehicle parked partially in the roadway with several persons standing around it. As Dfc. Moritz pulled up he observed a male and a female walk towards his patrol vehicle. Dfc. Moritz observed the male throw an aluminum foil ball into a grassy ditch. The male was very nervous. For Dfc. Moritz's safety he secured the male, Lerrell Eric Carey, age 20 of Lexington Park. Dfc. Moritz asked Mr. Carey what he had thrown into the ditch. Mr. Carey denied throwing anything. Dfc. Moritz walked over to the ditch and located the aluminum foil ball. Inside the aluminum foil ball was a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and two smaller plastic bags containing suspected cocaine. Lerrell Carey was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: On June 28 Deputy W. Waters responded to a residence of Laurel Grove Road in Mechanicsville in an attempt to serve a warrant. Upon arrival he observed a subject sitting in the driver sear a vehicle parked in the driveway. The driver was identified as Leslie Ann Gross, age 47 of Leonardtown. Gross' license to drive was suspended in Maryland. Ms. Gross told Deputy Waters she had nothing to hide and gave consent to search the vehicle. Search of the vehicle revealed a clear glass smoking device containing suspected cocaine residue.

OPEN WARRANT, ILLEGAL DRUGS: On June 28 Deputy Kevin Meyer was conducting a premise check of Devin Circle in Lexington Park when he observed James Robert Shade, Jr., age 31 of Great Mills, walk between two parked cars and discard an object into the parking lot from his right hand. A warrant check for Shade revealed an open warrant for his arrest. An immediate search of the area revealed a cigar blunt containing suspected marijuana.
