PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (June 30, 2008)—Vandals continue to plague Calvert County with racist, and now sexual, graffiti. Police say the vandals have used spray paint to mark streets, vehicles, street signs, and most recently the pier belonging to the Holland Cliffs community.

Graffiti painted on the walkway of a pier included the number "420," the word "Weed," and a graphic of what appears to be a plant or flower.

Graffiti painted on a sign at the Hickory Woods development included two crudely drawn penises and the words "penis" and "nigger."

Police believe the latest round of graffiti was left on Tuesday, June 24 and then again on Saturday, June 28.

Similar events in Charles County in the past few years were quickly labeled as "hate crimes" by the Charles County Sheriff's Office. The term has yet to be used by police in Calvert County in any of their press releases describing the crimes.

Hate crimes are acts designed to intimidate an entire class of people. For example, African Americans and homosexuals are two classes of people who in recent years have been victims of intimidation, and thus hate crimes.

Police are asking anyone with information relating to these incidents to please contact the Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack at (410) 535-1400 or the Calvert County Sheriff's Office at (410) 535-2800.
