LEONARDTOWN, Md.(May 08, 2008) - St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) announced today that they received a $15,000 donation from The Patuxent Partnership.
School officials say the donation will be used to fund the 2008 Summer Space Camps developed by the school system's STEM Consortium.
The purpose of space camp is to increase students' knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to broaden their interest in these subjects as they continue their academic studies. Participants will explore concepts such as engineering, rocketry, Earth science, space science, and space citizenship.
"This generous donation from The Patuxent Partnership will allow some qualified students who lack financial resources to participate in this worthwhile program," said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, superintendent of schools in a prepared statement. "We truly appreciate the continued support and commitment from The Patuxent Partnership."
The Patuxent Partnership is a consortium of local industry, military, and academia that support the Naval Air Systems Command and the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
