LA PLATA, Md. (April 3, 2008) - The Charles County Sheriff's Department today released the following incident and arrest reports.
ARMED ROBBERY ATTEMPT: The Charles County Sheriffs Office is investigating an armed robbery attempt that occurred on April 4 about 3:30 p.m. A 22-year-old man was on Lancaster Circle between Bluebird Drive and St. Patricks Drive when he came upon the suspects, eight black males between 16 and 18 years of age. The suspects yelled at the victim and one of them brandished a switchblade. The victim ran from the suspects. The suspects chased the victim but he managed to escape. Officers searched the area but the suspects were not located. STABBING: On April 2 at 12:13 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs officers responded to Civista Medical Center for the report of a victim being treated there for stabbing injuries sustained during an earlier altercation in Waldorf. An investigation revealed the victim, a 17-year-old Waldorf boy, and the suspect were fighting in the 200 block of Stoddard Avenue about 11:30 p.m. April 1 when the suspect stabbed the victim. An acquaintance of the victims transported him to Civista Medical Center. He was later flown to another hospital for further treatment but his injuries are not considered life-threatening. DRUG POSSESSION: On April 1 at 11:15 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs officers responded to a room at the Deluxe Inn located at 6705 Crain Highway in La Plata for the report of person armed with a gun. Officers determined none of the five individuals in the room was armed but one of them, Lawrence Earl McCartney, Jr., 29, of Ireland, W. Va., was in possession of crack cocaine. Officers arrested McCartney and charged him with possession of crack cocaine. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner. MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH: On April 1 at 8:01 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs officers responded to the intersection of Smallwood Drive West and Copley Avenue in Waldorf for the report of a motor vehicle crash. Investigation revealed a Dodge Caravan traveling west on Smallwood Drive West failed to stop for a red light and struck a Mercedes Benz making a left turn from Copley Avenue. The driver of the van, Adaljicia Maria Ruiz, 64, of Waldorf, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Civista Medical Center by ambulance for treatment. Three passengers in her vehicle, boys ages 16, 17, and 18, were uninjured. The 16-year-old boy became disorderly at the crash scene and was arrested by a Maryland State Police trooper. The driver of the Mercedes, Takia Cherie Holmes, 27, of Waldorf, was uninjured. Charges are pending against the driver of the Caravan. Officer R. Forbes is investigating.
