Hoyer Announces Key Staff Changes and Additions

Promotes Sudafi Henry, Welcomes New Health Advisor, Member Services Deputy & Speechwriter

WASHINGTON (April 1, 2008) – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced yesterday that he has promoted Deputy External Relations Director Sudafi Henry to Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor. Henry will replace Gina Mahony, who recently announced that she will be joining the lobbying office of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. Hoyer also announced new hires for the positions of Health Policy Advisor, Deputy Director of Member Services, and Speechwriter.

“Sudafi Henry has been an incredible asset in my office for the last two and a half years, demonstrating both keen judgment and a deep understanding of key issues,” stated Majority Leader Hoyer. “I am extremely pleased that he has accepted this new position where he will provide counsel on matters critical to this office and the Democratic Caucus.”

Previously, Henry served in Hoyer’s office as Counsel and Deputy Director for External Relations. In his new position, Henry will oversee a broad legislative portfolio, including financial services, consumer issues, trade, telecommunications, and intellectual property/patents. He will continue to serve as Counsel. Before joining Hoyer’s office, Henry was the Legislative Director for Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the George Washington University Law School.

Henry replaces Gina Mahony, who has served as a Senior Policy Advisor for Leader Hoyer for more than five years. Upon announcing her departure, Hoyer said, “Gina has been an integral part of my office for over five years. Her valuable experience and deep knowledge of the issues have been vital, and I wish her all the best as she begins this new phase in her career.”

Leader Hoyer also praised the addition of three new staff joining his office, “I am pleased to welcome such a talented group of professionals to the Majority Leader’s office. They each bring a breadth of experience and knowledge that will serve to advance the vision and agenda of the Democratic Caucus. I am confident that they will do a tremendous job and look forward to their contributions.”

Joining Leader Hoyer’s office as the new Health Policy Advisor is Elizabeth Thomas. For the last two years, Thomas has been the Deputy Legislative Director for Rep. Mike Thompson, advising him on health, tax, and Social Security/pension issues. Hoyer also announced that Rick Palacio will be the new Deputy Director of Member Services, taking the position formerly held by Alexis Covey-Brandt, now Deputy Floor Director. Palacio most recently served as the Deputy Communications Director and Legislative Assistant for Rep. John Salazar. In the speechwriter position, Hoyer welcomes Rob Goodman. Goodman joins the Leader’s office after serving as a speechwriter for Sen. Chris Dodd for the last 18 months.
