St. Mary's County Sheriff's Reports


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (March 14, 2008) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Department recently released the following incident and arrest reports.

THEFT UNDER $500: On March 11 Dfc. J. Maletto responded to the Sheetz in Great Mill's for the reported Theft. Investigation revealed store employee, James W. Hughes, age 19, of Callaway had stolen over $100.00 in U.S.Currency from the Sheetz. Hughes was arrested, charged with 2 counts of Theft under $500, Theft Scheme under $500 and incarcerated in the Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: On March 11 Sdfc. D. Corcoran observed Michael A. Barnes, age 22, Lexington Park standing in the stairwell of an apartment building in possession of suspected marijuana. Barnes attempted to discard the marijuana when he observed the officer make entry to the building. Barnes was placed under arrest and subsequently charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of CDS Paraphernalia. He was incarcerated in the Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

ASSAULT SECOND DEGREE: On March 11 deputy J. Graves responded to a residence in Mechanicsville for the report on an Assault. Investigation revealed Mark T. Grove, age 23, of Mechanicsville had struck his father with an aluminum broom handle following a verbal altercation. Grove was arrested, charged with Second Degree Assault and incarcerated in the Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

ESCAPE FROM DETENTION: Inmate James Gillespie III, age 31, was sentenced to the St. Mary's County Detention Center and authorized Work Release. Inmate Gillespie failed to return from work release as directed. Gillespie was located, returned to the Detention Center and charged with Escape Second Degree.

ASSAULT SECOND DEGREE: On March 7 2008 Sdfc. R. Maloy, School Resource Officer at Spring Ridge Middle School observed two students involved in a physical altercation in the cafeteria. The two students refused to obey Sdfc. Maloy's commands to discontinue their actions. Sdfc. Maloy then physically separated the students and subsequently charged both students with Assault Second degree and referred the charges to juvenile authorities for further action.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: On March 11 Sdfc. D. Ross received information two juvenile students at Chopticon High School were in possession of a prescription narcotic not prescribed to the students. One student admitted to "sniffing" one and one half tablets of Percocet and the other half was located in his pant pocket. The Percocet had been supplied by another student. The juvenile student was charged with Possession of a Schedule II drug and released to a parent. The second juvenile student was later identified and subsequently charged with Possession of a Schedule II drug and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule II drug and released to a parent. Both students are pending further action by juvenile authorities.

BURGLARY, THEFT, PROPERTY DESTRUCTION: On March 11 BCI detectives arrested Ryan M. Page, 22, of Leonardtown, and charged him with burglary, theft and property destruction for the December 09, 2007 burglary of the Mountain Mudd Business in Leonardtown. Page was incarcerated at the St. Mary's County Detention Center.
