WALDORF, Md. (March 13, 2008)—More than 90 young computer experts enjoyed a fast-paced challenge of their literacy and programming skills during the 19th Annual Southern Maryland Regional Computer Bowl, held March 1 at Theodore G. Davis Middle School in Waldorf.

Sponsors for the Computer Bowl are Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, the College of Southern Maryland, Booz Allen Hamilton and the public school systems in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties.

Twenty-four teams from 11 high schools in Southern Maryland took part in the Computer Bowl. In the first round of the competition, students took a written test of their computer literacy. In the second round, teams of three to four students created computer programs to solve specific problems.

A team from Huntingtown High School won first place with team members Kevin Clark, Chris Hurley, Martin Overstrom, and Billy Scharpf, coached by Tom Currier. Northern High School placed a team in second, with members Emily Brinker, Ryan Butler, Steven Chow, and Evan Siefring and coach Eric Stroh. Thomas Stone High School placed third, with team members Michael Gargano, Rebecca Parker, Justin Tavares, and Ashin Shad and coach Janet Bondelid. Another team from Huntingtown High won fourth place, with Robbie Lavoie, Sam Lewis, Andrew Phillips, and Eric Stevens and Tom Currier again coaching.

Winners received plaques, trophies, and U.S. Savings Bonds. Members of the first-place team also received performance awards from the College of Southern Maryland.

Employees from the college and military contractors served as judges for the competition. This year's judges were Robert Beckner, Carrie Dalton, Sharon Essick, Chad Kilgore, Karen Lusk, Doug Peters, Sharon Purcell, Doug Sanborn, and Suzanne Warner of Booz Allen Hamilton; Joe Burgin of the College of Southern Maryland; Dottie Tackett of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head; and Cathy Wood of System Planning Corporation.
