Victims include 1 from St. Mary's, 3 from Charles
ACCOKEEK, Md. (Feb. 18, 2008)—The Prince Georges County Police Department has positively indentified six of the eight spectators killed in Accokeek on Saturday as they watched an illegal drag race.
Police say that at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, a group of people were standing in the area of Indian Head Highway at Pine Drive watching a street race when they were struck by a vehicle that was northbound on Indian Head Highway. The driver of the striking vehicle was not involved in the street race.
At least 14 people were struck. Seven spectators were pronounced dead on the scene and an eighth person died at a local hospital. The other victims were treated for injuries.
The names of the victims released by the P.G. County Police Department are as follows:
Ervin Gardner, 39, of Oxon Hill, Prince Georges County;
Daryl Wills, 38, of Clinton, Prince Georges County;
Maycol Lopez, 20, of Gaithersburg, Montgomery County;
Blaine Briscoe, 49, of La Plata, Charles County;
William Gaines, 61, of Nanjemoy, Charles County; and
Mark Courtney, 33, of Leonardtown, St. Marys County.
Other reports identify another victim as Milton Pinkney, 41, of Aquasco, Charles County.
Gardner died at a hospital. The others died at the scene of the accident.
According to police on Sunday, one victim remains to be identified.
