LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Feb. 2, 2008)—St. Mary's County Sheriff Timothy K. Cameron recently recognized Correctional Officer Justin R. J. Cail as the Correctional Officer for the Third Quarter of 2007.
Cameron said he took great pleasure in recognizing Cail for his commitment to the agency and the citizens of St. Mary's County.
The Sheriff's Office selected Cail based on his actions on Sept. 22, 2007:
"On September 22, 2007 a homemade knife was found in the possession of an inmate who has assaulted staff in the past. The inmate was housed in segregation. The weapon was a sharpened piece of a mop bucket handle. Cail was assisting in searching the segregation housing unit for the remaining pieces of the handle when he observed something slightly protruding from a vent at the base of the toilet. Cail discovered three more pieces of the mop bucket handle. Each piece was approximately seven inches in length. By conducting a thorough search, Cail discovered the remaining handle pieces in an inconspicuous location which could have easily been overlooked. Cail's vigilance in searching could have saved serious injury or even death to himself or anyone else who could have come within arms reach of this violent inmate."
