Mechanicsville Teen Charged in Arson

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (Jan. 16, 2008)—The Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office yesterday charged a 15-year-old Mechanicsville teen for setting fire to a piece of construction equipment that was parked at the under construction Ben Oaks Development in Mechanicsville.

Deputy Fire Marshall Jason Mowbray investigated an arson fire involving a John Deere 792DLC Excavator owned by Calvert Lumber Company on Jan. 11. The fire resulted in $100,000 in damages to the piece of heavy construction equipment.

Six firefighters from Mechanicsville brought the fire under control within two minutes.

A teenage white male was seen leaving the scene just after the fire was discovered on a red four ATV with a black box on its rear.

The juvenile has been charged with second degree arson, and malicious burning. He has been released to the custody of his parent pending further action by the Department of Juvenile Services.
