Icy Road Claims Life of Mechanicsville Motorcyclist


HUGHESVILLE, Md. (Dec. 20, 2007)—A 63-year-old Mechanicsville man died on Monday after being run over by a truck when his motorcycle hit a patch of ice and he was thrown to the roadway. Police say Ronald Joseph Despres was travelling northbound on Md. Route 231, near the Md. Route 5 intersection, around 5:22 a.m. on his 2005 Honda motorcycle when he hit the icy patch and lost control.

Despres was struck as he lay on the roadway by a 2005 Freightliner Straight Truck which was driven by Richard Michael Meyers, 56, of Upper Marlboro, Md. Meyers received no injuries.

Despres was pronounced deceased at the scene and his body was transported to the medical examiner's office.

Police say a Red or Maroon Honda or Hyundai station wagon was observed at the collision scene. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the station wagon is requested to contact TFC Stevenson on 301-392-1200 or TFC Zimmerman on 301-392-1231.
