LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Dec. 11, 2007)—A fourteen-year-old freshman at Leonardtown High School was seriously injured yesterday afternoon when she was struck by a school bus on St. Andrew's Church Road shortly after exiting her school bus. Briana Upchurch suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull, broken upper and lower jaws, broken collar bone, and severe abrasions to her chest.
Upchurch was flown by helicopter to Prince George's Hospital where surgery was performed to remove her spleen. She has been released from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is currently listed in stable condition.
Police say Upchurch exited her school bus and was attempting to cross St. Andrew's Church Road in the area of Sandra Lane when she was struck by another school bus traveling Northbound on St. Andrew's Church Road.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m.
Police determined that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident.
